How does the QED work?

null
The QED makes chemicals typically found in petroleum hydrocarbons fluoresce. The fluorescence detected across the UV/visible range is used to create a fingerprint of the hydrocarbon in the sample.
Fingerprints of diesel or kerosene are very different but consistent. For example, diesel from a fuel station in the UK gives the same fingerprint as diesel from a fuel station in Australia
null
The QED software compares sample fingerprints to a library of reference fingerprints and can work out the proportions of the different hydrocarbon types in the sample.
This allows the QED to identify the hydrocarbons in the sample. The total fluorescence for each hydrocarbon identified is compared to the fluorescence intensity of the calibration curve for that hydrocarbon and the concentration calculated.
null
For each hydrocarbon type identified the concentration value is added together giving a total hydrocarbon concentration for the sample. The identity of the hydrocarbon type is also given. For example, diesel or degraded diesel or a mixture of diesel and lubricating oil.
The QED standard library contains 12 commonly used hydrocarbons ranging from gasoline to lubricating oils. The library also contains a coal tar and bitumen set

What can the QED detect?

  • Coal tars
  • Bitumen
  • Waste Oils
  • Fuel (Petrol, Diesel, Jet Fuel etc)
  • Crude Oils
  • Lubricating Oils etc

The analysis results show total BTEX, gasoline range hydrocarbons (C5-C10) and diesel/ oil range hydrocarbons (C10-C40)

The results also show the Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) including the sum of the 16 target PAH’s and benzopyrene.

How will it help us?

Site investigations are needed to confirm what pollutants are present, where they are and at what concentration.

This information then may be used to initially classify any excavated soil as hazardous or non-hazardous waste.
